Experiment: Set up the egg on your laptop. Place matboard on the keyboard and screen to create a backdrop. Tape a “seamless” background onto the top of the matboard to extend over both pieces. Use tape or glue dots to hold the egg in place.
Move the light from around the top of the egg in a circle
Move the egg from front to back.
Notice changes in the shape of the shadow, the shape of the egg.
Notice how the shade and tone of the background also changes.
Photograph: 1.Split Lighting: Light from the side at 90 *
2. Butterfly Lighting: Light is from above and in front
3. Loop Lighting: Light from the side about 45 * and slightly above the egg
4. Rim Lighting or Backlighting: light is behind (you may have to shine light straight down and behind egg with flashlight)
5. Rembrandt: Light is from high above and to the side.
6. Split Lighting +Reflector (use white board or paper)
*If light is too bright on the egg, pull flashlight farther away OR put tracing paper over the top to create a more diffused light.
Step Two: Create Shadows and Color
Experiment: Use props to create cast shadows onto egg. Move the light or the prop closer or farther away to have the shadow in either sharp or soft focus. You may also cut out shapes on card stock (windowpanes, stars, doorway, etc) Shine the flashlight through colored gels to create color casts on the scene. Use both 1 and 2 flashlights, and 1 or two colors.
